What to do in the first ten minutes after a bump
Topinsurance · 30 March 2026

The minutes after a collision are stressful, and what you do shapes how easily a claim resolves.
First, stop and make the scene safe — hazard lights on, and move to a safe spot if the cars are drivable and it's blocking traffic. Check everyone's okay before anything else.
Then exchange details: names, numbers, registrations, and insurer names. Photograph the vehicles, their positions, and any damage from a few angles. If there are independent witnesses, note their contact details too.
Don't admit fault at the scene — simply gather facts. Report it to your insurer promptly; many require notification even if you don't intend to claim.
