Black box insurance, explained without the jargon

A telematics — or 'black box' — policy uses a small device or app to measure how you drive: speed, braking, cornering, and the time of day you're on the road.

For newer drivers especially, this can translate into meaningful savings, because price stops being based purely on age and postcode and starts reflecting your actual behaviour.

The trade-off is feedback. You'll see scores, and very late-night driving or harsh braking can affect your renewal. If your driving is steady and mostly daytime, a black box often pays off.
